Reasons For Getting Cracked Heels; How to Fix Cracked Heels Naturally

Whenever most of us see those cracked heels, we assume that it might be due to either dehydration or the lack of moisture on our skin. But what you do not know is that there are actually a lot of other reasons which lead to the skin getting dried up around the heels and getting cracked.

Today we have put together some of the reasons for getting cracked heels and how to fix cracked heels naturally.

Extra body weight

Human feet carry the weight of the entire body most of the time. This is why when a person gains weight, this leads to increased pressure on the heels’ fat pads which then leads to the heels to be expanded in the sides for supporting this increased body weight. In that case, if the body is already lacking proper moisture on the skin, it causes cracked heels.

For fixing it, one needs to calculate their ideal weight as per their height and age. The weight should always be within a normal BMI range. One should also keep track of their health like checking their diabetic health by checking the blood sugar level daily.

Vitamin Deficiency

If the body is suffering from the deficiency of some essential minerals, vitamins as well as other nutrients, then the skin might not function in the way in which it should normally do. This leads to skin getting dry and then thick.

For fixing the dry skin, one must add the food groups that are enriched with the following vitamins and nutrients.

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B3
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Omega-3 Fatty acids

Wearing the wrong type of shoes

Shoes like flip flops, sandals and others like them which are open-backed are the ones that allow the fat under the heels to expand in the sides and lead to an increased chance of developing cracked heels. Thin soles and shoes that do not fit well also lead to pain in the heel and development of cracked heels.

Wearing the shoes with closed heels might help fix the problem as well as provide the proper support to the body’s posture. One can also check-up with a podiatrist for making sure if the shoe they are wearing is of right fit or not.

Menopause

Following the menopause stage in a female’s life, the majority of females tend to develop a condition called Acquired Keratoderma which leads to cracked heels as well as cracked skin on other body parts.

For getting rid of cracked heels, such females can try applying the estrogen ointments in topical use but they must consult with a doctor first.

Standing for a long period of time

Standing too long on wooden or hard floors is also one of the reasons for cracked heels that place additional pressure on one’s heels.

The solution to this is simple; avoid standing too long on such a solid surface. If that is not a possibility, then try performing simple exercises for redistribution of the pressure from one’s heels.

Bad shower routine

Taking showers or baths for a long period of time leads to natural oils from the skin to be washed away, leaving it dry and rough. The harsh soaps and chemicals in shampoos also damage the natural barrier of the human skin.

To avoid this case, always take the warm water bath for only 5 to 10 minutes. This will decrease the risk of moisture loss. Also, after taking a bath, always apply a thin layer of moisture on the entire body.

DIY foot soak for healing cracked heels

As a bonus we are listing down a recipe for a DIY foot soak for healing the cracked heels. The ingredients for this DIY foot soak are as follows.

  • Listerine; 1 Cup
  • White Vinegar: 1 cup
