We reviewed various studies related to the health of children and also made a list of the things that are actually really harmful to the children as per the advice of the experts. Below are some of the situations when parents unknowingly hurt their own children.
Tickling your children
It happens quite a lot that often adults want to make their children laugh so they tickle them. But as per a researcher from the University of California, this tickling actually does not cause the same happiness sensation as compared to that of a joke. This tickling happiness is only a mere illusion of the happy laugh.
In the case of tickling, children only laugh due to a reflex and almost all of the people laugh due to this very same reflex when tickled. But when a child laughs after getting tickled, they are actually laughing because they hate the tickling.
Putting the toys in the bed of a baby
Not many of the parents realize this fact that the child only requires a soft mattress, a clean sheet and a little warm blanket for a good sleep. A pillow is also not a necessity for a child’s sleep but can still be used.
What the children do not need at all are special decorations like the toys of any type and in fact, can become a problem for them when they sleep. A toy in a baby’s bed can be a choking hazard or it might simply wake them up.
Shaking the baby
Almost every parent in the world has been through this ordeal where they have to pick the baby up and shake it to help it get to sleep. However, sometimes the parents might get exhausted after continuous shaking but the baby is still not asleep.
As per pediatricians, these problems can be avoided by simply teaching your children their own sleeping schedule right from birth. Other things to help them get asleep faster are to eliminate any external or internal irritations such as wet diapers, hunger, noise or any other such things. If you still wish to shake your baby to help them fall asleep, then try to do the shaking gently and be sure that the shaking motions are smooth.
Hiding mirrors from babies because of some old superstitions
This is the popular and the oldest of the child-related superstitions that parents must not show their children the mirror as it will result in the child to get sick. This superstition has been debunked by almost all of the psychologists and pediatricians from across the world. The founder of The Positivity Institute named Dr. Suzy Green says that if the parents play with their children using the mirror, it actually helps in the development of the child’s self-awareness.
At different age periods of a child’s life, they experience different reactions upon seeing their reflection in a mirror. Well, whatever the experience of a child is, it is always a positive and a fascinating one for them.
Trying to make everything sterile around children
Many of us believe that for a child to be healthy and fit, their living environment should be extremely clean and sterile. However, the researchers from various countries are against this rule of cleanliness, instead, too much cleanliness can cause poor development of a child. Sterile environment leads to a slowed down the immune system that is essential to fight against the infections. Furthermore, a weakened immune system means increased allergic reactions such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, and rhinitis.
Parents often limit the contact of their child with a pet but if a child gets in contact and develops an allergen; their immune system will learn to fight against it better and faster.
Teaching the child on how to use the potty way too early
Potty training is a very controversial topic but one thing every parent should remember is that they must not follow instructions of the people who are not experts on this subject. No parent should expect from their child to start using a potty when they are merely one or 2 years old. They are not even capable of having the proper reaction to signals of their bodies at this tender age.
Stephen Hodges, the Child Urologist says, “Sooner or later a child is going to learn to control their signals and this will be the time when they will start using the potty. For normal bladder development, it usually takes about 3 to 4 years. Free urination of children such as doing it in a diaper actually helps in bladder development.”
Letting a child walk on the flat surfaces barefoot
A good number of children start walking at the young age of 1 year old and as soon as this happens parents either rush to store for buying those shoes or let the child walk on flat surfaces barefoot. As for researchers they still do not agree as to which the best way is. What they do agree upon is that not all of the surfaces are safe for a child to walk.
If a child walks on surfaces like grass, smooth rocks or sand, then it is best for them but walking on those perfectly flat tiles at everybody’s home is not a good idea. These flat surfaces hinder the proper development of the child’s leg muscles because the entire body weight is bear by the tendons. This can even lead to some serious conditions of the feet.
Spoon feeding a child
Associate professor of the child public health working at Swansea University, Amy Brown says that no parent must help a child eat when the child is already capable of holding a spoon and eating food by themselves.
She says, “Children who are spoon-fed by their parents tend to develop problems of extra weight later on in life. When a child is spoon-fed it is hard to determine when he or she is full and this causes the child to overeat.”
Wrapping a kid in a blanket when their feet and hands get cold
If the hands, feet, and nose of the child are not warm, it still does not mean that the child is cold. This occurs mainly due to the variation in the vascular tone and the blood circulation among children and it is perfectly normal for these body parts of a child to be cooler than the others. The temperature in a child’s room should be normally in-between 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. In this temperature range, the child does not need to wear a hat, gloves or socks. The skin should be left a little bare for it to breathe and have the appropriate contact with air.
