Age Gracefully

Age Gracefully: The belief that “good genes” are vital to aging well is simply misguided. There are many things you can do to age well.

In reality, the true secrets for staying free from chronic illness, leading a good life and looking good are just simple daily habits.

Adopt These Habits Now

One of them that I want to encourage everyone to have, is eating an abundance of healthy, plant-based foods.

Why? Well, let’s start with your gut microbiome – in particular, your large intestine, the “home” of what’s generically known as the microbiome.

Inside your microbiome are trillions of good bacteria that your body relies on to support biological processes (like digestion) that are essential to life.

A diet with a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains means that the microbiome is well fed and have the energy to do their job in preventing chronic inflammatory issues.

Promoting healthy bacteria throughout your life contributes to healthy aging.

Healthy Habits For Graceful Aging

Other habits that can help you age gracefully include:

Staying hydrated: From our brains to our stomachs, every cell in our body relies on water to work its magic. I often advise my patients to take their weight, cut it in half, and aim to drink that many ounces of water each day. So, for instance, if someone weighs 180 pounds, they should be aiming for about 90 ounces of water daily.

Exercising regularly: The perks of exercising go way beyond just keeping your heart and blood vessels in check. Any effort you put into building muscle. whether it’s through resistance training or simply taking regular walks—also helps protect your bones.

Plus, exercise can really boost your balance and make everyday tasks, like climbing stairs, feel a lot easier. I recommend aiming for about 30 to 90 minutes of activity each day. It’s important to pick exercises that you actually enjoy; that way, you’ll be more likely to stick with it and hit your fitness goals!

Getting enough sleep: Your body works hard to support you as you move through your busy life. This is why it’s so important to get 8 hours of sleep every day. While you’re sleeping, your body can restore itself and clear out waste, including damaged and worn out cells, which allows you to feel your best at any age.

Managing stress levels: It’s hard to avoid stress entirely, so I help my patients find good ways to manage it. Research shows that just a few minutes of deep breathing throughout the day can lower levels of the body’s stress hormone, cortisol. This is one of many ways you can de-stress your life.

Keeping your brain active: Taking care of your brain helps you maintain short- and long-term memory. Simple activities such as crossword puzzles or knitting are great for your brain health. Additionally, maintaining social connections with loved ones helps reduce your risk of cognitive decline and chronic disease while supporting your immune system.

Selecting gentle skin care products: Taking care of your skin is key to keeping that healthy glow, but it’s really just the tip of the iceberg. Your skin plays a vital role in regulating your body temperature and helps you feel the world around you, contributing greatly to your overall well-being. Treat your skin right by opting for mineral-based makeup and hygiene products that are free from petroleum.
